![]() ![]() Stowe, Vermont.Ĭolin Hubbell is co-owner of the Green Onion Pub and The Beer Hub in South Utica. This week's recommendation: Von Trapp Brewing “Vienna Lager,” a crisp, full-bodied, traditional amber lager. One taste of their Vienna lager and the brewery’s heritage unfolds for you. To reiterate, finding a good imported example will be a challenge, but Von Trapp Brewing in Stowe, Vermont, will get you pretty close. A good one is something to relish, and then relish again. The Vienna lager lands in a place where it’s toastier than pale German lagers but nowhere near the caramel and melanoidin-heavy richness of modern Oktoberfest. Authentic examples are increasingly hard to find (except perhaps in the craft beer industry) as formerly good examples become sweeter and use more adjuncts. The final product, when brewed by an expert, presents subtle hops, crisp-clean sessionability, and a light body with hints of toasted malt and caramel sweetness. Named for the city in Austria that developed this delicious amber lager, its creation involves a three-step decoction boiling process that incorporates a variety of German and Austrian malts, most notably Vienna malt. ![]() More than likely you’ve also had versions hailing from Mexico due to the emigration of some Austrian brewers to Mexico during that time in the 19th century when the French took over the country and installed an Austrian as Mexican emperor. There are without question plenty of nice lagers brewed here in the states, like in Pennsylvania Victory’s “Prima Pils” or in California Firestone Walker’s “Pivo Pils ” there are too many others to mention. Of course it is only natural for these countries to have such lager brewing prowess, considering lager’s geographic origin in northeastern Europe. ![]() And, perhaps more significant, at least in my mind, than their dominance on the snow during luge or biathlon competitions is their mastery of the lager and all of its associated styles. As you may have noted recently, the northern European nations are pretty good at the winter Olympics – among other things they put their minds to. ![]()
